Learning Areas

At The Sycamore School we plan, teach, assess and report using the Australian Curriculum version 9.0.

The Prep to Year 10 Australian Curriculum identifies and organises the essential knowledge, understandings, and skills that students should learn in 8 learning areas. The learning areas of English, Mathematics, Science, and Health and Physical Education comprise a single subject. The learning areas of Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), The Arts, Technologies and Languages each comprise multiple subjects.

General Capabilities

In the Australian Curriculum, general capabilities equip young Australians with the knowledge, skills, behaviours, and dispositions to live and work successfully. General capabilities are developed through the content of the learning areas.

  • Critical and Creative Thinking
  • Digital Literacy
  • Ethical Understanding
  • Intercultural Understanding
  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Personal and Social capability

The Sycamore School acknowledges that there are different ways in which the community talks about autism – some use identity first or autism affirming language, ‘Autistic person’ and some use person first language, ‘person with autism’.  Here at The Sycamore School we believe that our young people should be celebrated for their strengths, that they are valued and empowered to be proud of the unique capabilities’ autism brings to their life.  The Sycamore School is using autism affirming language.

We would like to acknowledge the Quandamooka people, Traditional Custodians of the land our School is on, and pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging. We extend our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples throughout Australia.
